Web16 jan. 2024 · Two sets of performance data of the same radio-frequency ion-thruster (RIT) have been recorded using iodine and xenon, respectively, as propellant. To characterize the thruster’s performance, we have recorded the radio-frequency DC-power, required for yielding preset values of the extracted ion-beam currents, as a function of mass flow. http://electricrocket.org/2024/926.pdf

WebBusek has demonstrated experimental xenon Hall thrusters at power levels up to and exceeding 20kW. Busek has also developed Hall thrusters that operate on iodine, bismuth, carbon dioxide, magnesium, zinc, and other substances. In 2008, a xenon fueled Busek Hall thruster appeared in National Geographic. WebWith a dry mass of 280 g and a volume of 180 cm3, the iodine μACFT EM is designed to fit inside of the tuna can extension of the 3U+ CubeSat structure. This form factor makes it incredibly small relative to other iodine thrusters. The measured thrust of the iodine μACFT is 227 - 254 μN, with a total system power consumption of 8.3 - 11.6 W. WebFor this purpose, we have chosen ThrustMe’s iodine thruster NPT-30I2. At 300 km, the atmospheric den-sity ranges between 2:10 12 and 3:10 11 kg.m 3, de-pending on the solar activity [1], and by our analy-sis the atmospheric drag causes the altitude of a 6U nanosatellite with deployed solar panels to decrease by around 500m per day. Web30 mrt. 2016 · The thruster efficiency is however slightly higher for iodine compared with xenon, due to its lower ionization potential. This demonstrates that iodine could be a viable alternative propellant for gridded plasma thrusters.
