Stevenson was recovering from bladder cancer surgery at the Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center on February 15, 1996, when he suffered a sudden fatal heart attack. He was cremated and his ashes are interred in Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles. By coincidence, Roger Bowen, who portrayed Henry Blake in the 1970 movie MASH, died due to a heart attack the day after Stevenson.
